Formia reduces TARI by 8%: REA as technical partner in the efficiency improvement process

Over the 2026-2027 period, the waste tariff (TARI) of the Municipality of Formia (LT, Lazio) will decrease by approximately 8% overall, with a 3% reduction in 2026 and a further 4.7% decrease in 2027. This is a particularly significant result in a national and regional context marked by rising waste management costs.

The announcement was made during the conference “ARERA regulation in the urban waste sector: the opportunities arising from the new regulatory requirements”, promoted by the Municipality of Formia and Formia Rifiuti Zero. The event provided an opportunity to discuss regulatory developments in the sector and the opportunities linked to more efficient, transparent and service-quality-oriented management.

The reduction in TARI is the outcome of a structured process based on organisational choices, cost control, improved environmental performance and the enhancement of separate waste collection. According to the data communicated, in the first months of the year Formia reached approximately 80% separate waste collection, generating significant savings that may translate into a direct benefit for citizens and businesses.

Throughout this process, REA supported Formia Rifiuti Zero as a technical-specialist partner, contributing to analysis activities, regulatory support and assistance in building a more efficient and sustainable management model.

The Formia case confirms how regulation, when interpreted not only as a compliance requirement but also as a lever for industrial planning, can become a practical tool to improve service quality, strengthen the economic sustainability of management and return value to the local area.

For REA, this result represents a concrete example of the role that technical-regulatory advisory can play alongside public administrations and publicly owned companies: turning regulatory complexity, operational data and environmental objectives into measurable, sustainable decisions capable of generating positive impacts for communities.
