WHICH IS THE ENERGY FUTURE OF SARDINIA? GAS STILL STRUGGLING AGAINST RENEWABLE ELECTRICIFATION WHILE SARDINIAN PEOPLE PATIENTLY AWAIT

Is the long-standing debate on renewables scenario in Sardinia finding a final solution? Sardinia as Hawai? Does a 585km gas pipeline make sense nowadays where the european energy policy is promoting the the hydrogen european backbone infrastructure?

These are the themes on this great article written by Heather O’Brian together with the italian green economists and policy makers.

Sardinia is known for its huge potential in wind and solar resources, as other Southern Regions in Italy.

However, beyond the modest changes introduced with the DL Semplificazione, Italian Governament should increase its commitment to simplify authorisation paths of greenfiled plants and invest on power infrastructures and balancing system regulation.

That’s the Big Challenge to lead the way in the italian energy transition.

Giuseppe Mastropieri states: “From an industrial point of view, Italy is well-positioned to play a leading role in the energy transition, with strong renewable resources – in particular solar –  well-developed electricity infrastructure and a backup provided by natural gas. This potential is being stymied by slow permitting and bureaucracy”.
